PRIVATE WORKSHOPPING
YOUR WRITING SIDEKICK AWAITS
Maybe you’re pantsing through a cozy mystery and hit a snag with a red herring, you’re not sure the POV you picked is quite right, or your heroine/ hero got sidetracked by a subplot (characters, right?). We’ve all had those stumbling block moments and now is the time to get support so you can get back on track.
Unlike a full developmental edit, which covers your entire manuscript, workshopping allows us to zero in on chapters, scenes, or specific elements of writing crafts like dialogue or navigating dropping clues at just the right moment.
I’ll offer guidance and actionable feedback both on the page and in an editorial letter to get you confidently back on track. Plus you’ll have the option for a follow up video call or a second editorial pass on your revisions.
Guidance Over Opinions
You might be thinking, “Uh, Rachel, my writing group offers feedback for free. Why should I pay for it?”
Writer critique groups are wonderful for community vibes and general feedback. But they often come with a dozen conflicting opinions from writers who might not even read your genre.
Wouldn’t it be better to receive clear, actionable insights from an experienced editor who gets storytelling nuances, genre expectations, and what truly makes a mystery manuscript shine?
Workshopping is all about the big picture including things like style elements, focusing on story structure, plot and subplot, character development, pacing, dialogue, and voice. We’ll hone in on the storytelling magic that makes your manuscript truly shine, leaving the nitty-gritty detail work for a later stage in your editing journey.
This isn’t a way to get developmental or copyediting completed one chapter at a time. If you tried to get your whole book edited this way, you’d spend a lot more in the long run, and I wouldn’t be able to assess overarching issues with things like plot, pacing, and character development.
WHAT YOU GET
Each workshop session is an exciting opportunity to tighten your manuscript and sharpen your writing skills. Plus, you’ll discover both your writing strengths and pesky writing habits. Here’s what you can expect:
Craft Development
Whether it’s a full chapter, scintillating scene, or detailed outline, I’ll provide in-depth feedback on what’s working, what’s not, and how to boost elements like character development, pacing, dialogue, and story structure.
Gentle Edits
You’ll receive inline comments throughout your manuscript excerpt, including reactions, questions, and technique suggestions to improve clarity, style, and meet genre expectations.
Actionable Feedback
Get a brief editorial letter summarizing my feedback with suggestions for next steps and resources. Plus, choose between a 45-minute call or submitting rewritten content for another review (must be submitted within one week of the workshop).
Optional – Call First
Do you want to have a coaching or craft session first? We can 100% do that, and you’ll have one week to send your writing in for feedback. Please note this replaces the normal follow-up call. We can do an additional 30 minute call or second round of revisions for an extra fee.
