Hi, I'm Rachel Clair

Developmental editor Rachel Clair working on a laptop outside on a spring day

I’m a developmental editor and writing coach with a PhD in health psychology and an MFA in creative writing. I understand how daunting it feels to share your precious words, especially in their early stages. My mission? To make the editing process smooth and positive with my gentle, empathic approach.

My love for storytelling took root when I was eight, alongside my dad’s old, clunky laptop—imagine writing on a green text screen just a few inches wide and saving files to a floppy disk. (I know, I’m dating myself!) I’d vanish for hours, weaving tales in my room or embarking on a grand adventure to the library to fill up my little red wagon.

As a ghostwriter, I saw firsthand how authors struggled with overwhelm, self-doubt, and the elusive search for their unique voices. When it came time for editing, their stress levels skyrocketed, and I worked to put them at ease. Witnessing those “aha” moments when my guidance propelled them over obstacles was pure motivational magic.

Realizing that my true joy lay in those transformative moments, I shifted focus to developmental editing, specializing in fiction. But I didn’t want to be the stereotypical red pen-wielding editor who leaves writers feeling deflated. So if you want a direct, no-nonsense editor, I’m not your gal.

I started Clair Creative Co to help authors unlock their creative potential and elevate their book-writing mojo by providing warm support, gentle feedback, and approachable revision strategies. My goal is to have you view editing as an exciting next step on your publishing journey.

I can’t wait to read your story and help you get one step closer to finishing your book.  In the meantime, reach out and say hello. Seriously, drop me a message and tell me something you love about your book, ask a writing question, or share a picture of your pet (bonus points if you have a cat).
